Time

Time is a way of telling us what part of the day it is. We use time to know when something happens. In Class 1 Maths, learning about time is very important. Let us learn what time is, why it matters, and how we can understand it through examples and activities.

Time is something we all experience, but it can be hard to understand. To make it easier, we're going to talk about clocks, hours, minutes, and different parts of the day like morning, noon, and night.

What is the time?

Time helps us know when things start and end. It tells us when we have to get ready for school, when to play and when to eat. Time is divided into hours and minutes.

Imagine time like the songs we listen to. A song has a beginning, middle and end. Time also has parts like the beginning of the day which is called morning, the middle part which is called afternoon and the end which is called night.

Use of watches

We use watches to see the time. There are mainly two types of watches: analog and digital.

Analog clocks

Analog clocks have a round face with numbers from 1 to 12. They have two hands: a short hand for the hours and a long hand for the minutes.

Example of reading an analog clock:

12 3 6 9

The short needle points to 12, and the long needle points to 3. This means the time is 12:15.

Digital watches

Digital clocks show the time with numbers. They show the hours and minutes in a format like this: HH:MM, where HH is the hour and MM is the minute.

Example of reading a digital clock:

03:45

This time the time is 3 hours 45 minutes.

Understanding hours and minutes

A clock is divided into hours and minutes. There are 24 hours in a day. Each hour is divided into 60 minutes.

Let us see how we can tell time on a clock using hours and minutes.

Hours

The small hand in an analog clock indicates the hour. When the small hand points to the number 1, it is 1 o'clock. If it points to the number 2, it is 2 o'clock, and so on.

Example of only hours on a clock:

12 3 6 9

The short hand points to 1, which means it is 1 o'clock now.

Minutes

The long hand in an analog clock shows the minutes. If the long hand points to 1, it means that 5 minutes of the hour have passed. If it points to 6, it means that 30 minutes of the hour have passed.

Example of just minutes on a clock:

12 3 6 9

The long hand points to 3, which means that 15 minutes of the hour have passed.

Parts of the day

There are different parts of the day: morning, afternoon, evening and night. Knowing these parts helps us understand when we should do which activities. Let's learn about them.

Morning

Morning time is when the day begins. You wake up, brush your teeth, eat breakfast and go to school. Morning time is usually from 6:00 to 12:00.

Afternoon

Noon is when the sun is high in the sky. You may be at school, having lunch, or playing outside. Noon is usually from 12:00 to 5:00.

Evening

Evening time is when the day starts to end. You eat and watch TV or read a book. Evening usually starts at 5:00 and lasts until 8:00.

Night

Night is when it gets dark outside and we go to sleep. Night time is from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am the next day.

Now you know about the four parts of the day and what activities are done in each part.

Time to practice reading

Let's practice understanding time together by reading clocks and finding out the time.

Read the time on this analog clock:

12 3 6 9

The short hand points to 12 and the long hand to 3, the time is 12:15.

Read the time on this digital clock:

07:30

This time is 7 hours 30 minutes, which is 7:30 in the morning.

Fun activities to learn time

Learning about time can be fun. Here are some activities you can try.

Create your own clock

Use a paper plate and colored markers to make a clock. Draw the numbers 1 to 12 on the edge of the plate. Use two strips of paper as clock hands and connect them in the middle with a brass fastener. Practice moving the hands to show different times.

Time hunt game

Ask a friend or family member to hide small paper clocks around the house, each showing a different time. When you find a clock, say the time out loud, such as, "It's 2:30!"

Conclusion

Time is an important part of our daily lives. Reading clocks and understanding hours and minutes is a big step in grade 1 math. With practice, you will be able to tell time quickly and enjoy all the fun activities that come with it.

Keep practicing, and soon you'll understand how time helps us plan our day and know when to do different things. Enjoy learning about time!
