Introduction to Grams and Pounds
In this lesson, we'll learn about weighing things. We use weights every day. When we go to the store, when we're baking with our parents, or when we're holding our favorite toy, we're talking about weight. Today, we'll learn about two units used to measure weight: grams and pounds.
Understanding weight
Weight tells us how heavy something is. Just as we use a ruler to measure the length or height of something, we use a scale to measure how heavy something is. There are different units for measuring weight. Two common units are grams and pounds.
What are grams?
Grams are a unit of weight that is mostly used in the metric system. The metric system is easy to understand because it is based on the number ten. Think about holding a feather. A feather doesn't weigh much. We say it weighs just a few grams. Small things, such as paper clips or a few grains of rice, are also measured in grams.
1 gram (g) = very light, like a small feather
Use of grams
Suppose you have three small apples. Each apple weighs about 100 grams. So, if you have three apples, the total weight is:
3 apples × 100 grams each = 300 grams
The more apples you have, the more grams you will have.
Let us understand this with an example:
What are pounds?
Pounds are another unit of weight. You may have heard your parents say that something weighs a certain number of pounds. Pounds are mainly used in the traditional system, which is common in places like the United States.
Think about holding a bag of sugar or flour. These things are heavier than some feathers. We use pounds to measure the weight of these things.
1 pound (lb) = about the weight of a loaf of bread
Use of the pound
Suppose you have two large books. Each book weighs about 1 pound. So, if you lift both books, their total weight will be:
2 books × 1 pound each = 2 pounds
It might help to look at it in this example:
Comparison of grams and pounds
Let's compare grams and pounds. Grams are a smaller unit than pounds.
1 ounce (about 28 grams) helps us understand pounds. For example, one pound is about 453.6 grams. This makes pounds heavier than grams.
1 pound = 453.6 grams
If you have a toy that weighs 500 grams, that's a little over 1 pound:
500 grams > 1 pound
However, if you have 300 grams of marbles, that would be less than a pound:
300 grams < 1 pound
Everyday examples
Example with grams
Think of a sandwich. A sandwich can weigh about 200 grams. If you have two sandwiches, you have:
2 sandwiches × 200 grams each = 400 grams
Imagine this example:
Example with pounds
Imagine you are carrying a backpack. If your backpack contains lunch and books, it may weigh 5 pounds. If you also add a water bottle weighing 1 pound, the total weight will be:
5 pounds + 1 pound = 6 pounds
Imagine this example:
Conclusion
We use units like grams and pounds to measure weight every day. Grams are used for lighter objects, while pounds are used for heavier objects. Now you know more about measuring weight and comparing different units!
