Counting to 100


Counting to 100 is an important skill that children start learning from Class 1. It is a cornerstone for understanding numbers and developing math skills. Learning to count is not just about memorizing numbers; it is about understanding the order of numbers, recognising patterns and knowing the concept of quantity.

Why is counting important?

Counting helps children understand the concept of numbers and their relationship to one another. Learning to count also helps children in everyday life, as they use numbers frequently for various tasks.

Basic counting

The first step in counting is learning the order of numbers. It is very important to learn to say the numbers from 1 to 100 in order. Children start by learning 10 numbers first and gradually add more numbers as they become more comfortable.

When counting, say the numbers out loud:

Counting in groups

Counting to 10

Counting by 10 is the same as adding 10 each time:

10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100.

Using the number line

Number lines are a great way to visualise counting. They are a straight line with numbers placed at equal intervals along the length. This helps children to see the distance between numbers and understand the order of counting.

Tally marks

Tally marks are another tool to help understand counting. They are straight line marks used to keep score of a certain amount. Every fifth tally is crossed off from the first four to form a group of 5, which is an easy way to count fives.
