Grade 3Measurement

Time

Time is an important concept in our daily lives. It helps us organize our day, know when to start and stop activities, and understand how to sequence events. In Grade 3 Math, you will learn about the different parts of time and how to measure it. Let's explore time and learn how we can read and understand it using clocks and calendars.

What is the time?

Time is a way of describing events in sequence: what happens first, what happens next, and what happens last. It is divided into parts such as seconds, minutes, and hours. We use clocks to tell time and calendars to keep track of days, weeks, and months.

Parts of time

Seconds

A second is a very short amount of time. It's the smallest period of time we usually talk about. There are 60 seconds in a minute. Sometimes we can count seconds like "one Mississippi, two Mississippi" to figure out how long something takes.

Minutes

A minute is made up of 60 seconds. It is longer than a second but shorter than an hour. When you brush your teeth or sing a short song, it usually takes a few minutes.

Hours

An hour is 60 minutes. That's a long period of time. There are 24 hours in a day. Activities like eating a meal or attending class are usually measured in hours.

Day

A day is 24 hours long. It includes both day and night. Days are shown on a calendar and there are seven days in a week.

Weeks

A week consists of 7 days. The days of the week are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We use the week to plan activities such as school schedules.

Month

Months are made up of different numbers of days. Some months have 30 days, some have 31 days and February has 28 or 29 days. There are 12 months in a year.

Year

A year has 12 months. We count years to measure long periods of time, such as how old we are. Each year usually has 365 days, except leap years, which have 366 days.

Reading clocks

Watches are devices we use to tell time. There are mainly two types of watches: analog and digital.

Analog clocks

Analog clocks have numbers from 1 to 12 and rotating hands. The short hand represents the hour, and the long hand represents the minute. Let's look at some examples.

Example 1

The clock shows 3:00.

Example 2

The time is 6:45.

Digital watches

Digital clocks show the time with numbers, such as 3:15 or 12:45. It's easy to read because the numbers tell you the hour and minutes directly.

Example 1

08:30

It shows that the time is 8:30 AM.

Example 2

15:45

This shows that the time is 3:45 PM.

Using the calendar

A calendar helps us keep track of days, weeks, and months. We use it to remember important events like birthdays or holidays. Let's take a look at some parts of a calendar.

The months of the year

There are twelve months in a year. They are:

  • January
  • February
  • March
  • April
  • May
  • June
  • July
  • August
  • September
  • October
  • November
  • December

Days of the week

There are seven days in a week. These are as follows:

  • Monday
  • Tuesday
  • Wednesday
  • Thursday
  • Friday
  • Saturday
  • Sunday
The week starts on Monday and ends on Sunday.

Measuring time

We use different instruments and units to measure time. You have learnt about hours, minutes, seconds and days. Here is how we can measure time using some instruments.

Using a stopwatch

A stopwatch is a special clock used to measure how long it takes to complete something. You turn it on when you start an activity and turn it off when you finish. Stopwatches are used in races to see who is the fastest.

Converting time

Sometimes we need to convert between different units of time. For example, converting minutes to hours or seconds to minutes.

Example:

There are 60 minutes in an hour. So if you have 120 minutes, you can convert it to hours by dividing it by 60:

120 minutes ÷ 60 = 2 hours

There are 60 seconds in a minute. So if you have 180 seconds, you can convert it to minutes by dividing it by 60:

180 seconds ÷ 60 = 3 minutes

Practice exercises

Let's practice telling time! Try these exercises with an adult if you need help.

Exercise 1

Read the time on this analog clock:

What is the time?

Exercise 2

Which day comes after Wednesday?

Exercise 3

If a movie starts at 2 pm and is 1 hour 30 minutes long, what time will it end?

Conclusion

Understanding time helps you in everyday life, from waking up in the morning to going to bed at night. Learning to measure time with clocks and calendars makes it easier to plan your day and activities. Keep practicing telling time on both analog and digital clocks and don't forget to use a calendar to remember important dates!
