Time

Time is an important part of our everyday lives. It helps us order events, make plans and stay on time. In this guide, we will learn what time is, how we measure it and how to read clocks. We will use simple terms and examples to make it easy for everyone to understand.

What is the time?

Time may seem complicated, but you can think of it as a way to describe moments in our day. When we talk about time, we usually want to know when something happened, is happening, or will happen. For example, if you have a school class that starts at 9 a.m., "9 a.m." tells you the time when your class starts.

Measuring time

We measure time in units such as seconds, minutes, and hours, which helps us organize how long something takes or when it happens.

  • 1 minute = 60 seconds
  • 1 hour = 60 minutes
  • 1 day = 24 hours

Let's write these relationships in code for clarity:

1 minute = 60 seconds 1 hour = 60 minutes 1 day = 24 hours

Reading the clock

Most of the time we use watches to tell time. There are mainly two types of watches: analog watches and digital watches.

Analog clocks

An analog clock has a round face with three hands moving around it. Each hand tells you something different about the time:

  • The smallest needle is the hour needle. It tells what hour it is.
  • The longer hand is the minute hand. It tells how many minutes later the hour is.
  • Some clocks have a seconds hand, which moves quickly to count each second.
12 3 6 9

In the above clock example, the hour hand is pointing at 4 and the minute hand is pointing at 6. This means the time is 4:30.

Digital watches

Digital clocks display the time as numbers, which can be easier to read. It shows the time in HH:MM format. For example, if a digital clock shows 08:45, it means it has been 8 hours and 45 minutes.

Time to say

When you're learning how to tell time, start with the hours and then move on to the minutes.

Telling the hour

First, look at where the hour hand is pointing. Is it pointing directly at a number, or is it in between two numbers? If it's in between, the hour is the last number it passed over.

12 3 6 9

In the above example, the hour hand is between 5 and 6, so the hour is 5.

Statement of minutes

After finding the hour, look at where the minute hand is. The numbers on the clock face indicate minutes in increments of 5. If the minute hand points to 3, you calculate: 3 x 5 = 15 minutes.

12 3 6 9

In this example, the minute hand is pointing to 3. This means 15 minutes. The time is 5:15.

Understanding AM and PM

We divide time into two parts: AM and PM. This helps us to know whether the time is morning or afternoon or evening:

  • AM stands for "Ante Meridiem" and it means before noon. Think of it as morning time.
  • PM stands for "post meridiem" and it means after noon. It stands for afternoon and evening time.

For example:

  • If you wake up at 7:00 AM, that means it is 7:00 AM right now.
  • If you eat dinner at 6 in the evening, it will be 6:00 pm.

Practice makes perfect

Learning to tell time takes practice. Here are some tips to get better:

  • Check the clock regularly to know the time.
  • Practice moving the clock hands to create different times.
  • Ask questions if you are unsure about reading the clock.

Activities to improve timing skills

Try these activities to get a better understanding of telling time:

Matching game

Create cards that display the time in both analog and digital formats. Mix them up and see if you can find matching pairs.

Time question game

Ask a friend or family member to ask the question. They can tell the time, and you have to move the clock hands to adjust the time.

Design your own clock

Make a paper clock with moving hands. This hands-on activity can make learning even more fun.

Why is timing important?

Understanding time helps in several ways:

  • It helps you manage your daily routine, like knowing when to catch the bus.
  • This allows you to plan activities so that you have enough time to play and do homework.
  • It makes you punctual so that you don’t miss important appointments or events.

Time is a part of our everyday lives, and once you know how it works, you can do a lot more with your day!
